Europe is generating more packaging waste, but it’s also getting better at recycling it. Recent Eurostat data paints a complex picture of EU packaging waste and recycling efforts. While the overall volume of packaging waste continues to be a significant environmental concern, the latest sustainability statistics for 2023 indicate a positive trend: the share of recycled materials in the EU economy is on the rise.
In 2023, the EU’s circular material use rate – which measures the contribution of recycled materials to overall material use – reached 11.8%.
