Amazon has officially selected Italy as the first European country to host a Prime Air drone delivery hub, marking a decisive step in the evolution of e-commerce logistics. The new operational base will be located in San Giovanni Teatino, Abruzzo, and will serve as the launch point for Amazon’s drone delivery service across Europe.
The Prime Air program, already piloted in the United States and the United Kingdom, is designed to deliver lightweight parcels directly to customers within 60 minutes using autonomous electric drones. With the Italian hub, Amazon is expanding its network into continental Europe for the first time, a strategic move that reinforces Italy’s growing role as a logistics and innovation center in the EU.
According to Amazon, drone deliveries will initially target selected zones in Abruzzo before extending to other regions and European countries. The service will focus on lightweight, small-format parcels, optimizing airspace management and aligning with EU safety and sustainability regulations. Each delivery drone is designed to reduce both carbon emissions and road congestion, contributing to the company’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
