Amazon sustainability packaging report

The latest Amazon Sustainability Report 2024 highlights major steps in renewable energy, logistics, and Amazon packaging, while acknowledging ongoing challenges in emissions.

The newly released Amazon Sustainability Report 2024 puts a strong spotlight on Amazon packaging initiatives, showing significant progress in reducing plastics and scaling recyclable solutions.

In 2024, Amazon cut single-use plastic packaging by 16%, lowering consumption to around 74,000 metric tons. A major milestone came with the complete elimination of plastic air pillows, replaced by curbside-recyclable paper fillers.

Another key step is the “Ships in Product Packaging” program, which allows products to be delivered in their own branded boxes without additional Amazon wrapping. Last year, the initiative certified 18 million products, and 12% of global orders shipped without extra packaging, reducing waste and improving efficiency.

Amazon also invested in automation and AI-driven right-sizing algorithms, ensuring packages are better fitted to product dimensions, cutting material use while maintaining protection. These measures align with consumer demand for easier recycling: paper packaging in the U.S. has a recycling rate of 60-64%, compared to just 5% for plastic.

While the full Amazon Sustainability Report addresses energy, logistics, and emissions, packaging remains one of the clearest areas of measurable success, earning industry praise for its scalability and impact.

With billions of packages shipped each year, even incremental shifts in Amazon packaging design and materials have a major footprint, positioning the company as a driver of global packaging sustainability.
