Nestlé and IBM have announced a strategic partnership to apply generative Artificial Intelligence to the development of high-barrier sustainable packaging. The goal: accelerate the discovery of new materials, reduce environmental impact, and maintain the highest levels of product protection and food safety.

At the heart of the initiative is a chemical language model combined with a regression transformer, trained on an extensive public and proprietary database containing the molecular and structural properties of hundreds of materials. This system enables AI to “design” composites capable of blocking moisture, oxygen, and temperature variations, preserving product quality.

The real breakthrough lies in R&D speed: a development cycle that once took years can now be completed in weeks or months, thanks to high-precision digital simulations. At the same time, the algorithm balances three key factors (food safety, recyclability, and cost) selecting only the most promising options for prototyping.

This leap forward is part of Nestlé’s broader digital transformation strategy, which includes the introduction of digital twins, advanced sensors, and robotics into production lines, along with the opening of a new deep-tech R&D center.

The implications for the packaging industry are significant:

  • Accelerated time-to-market through predictive R&D.
  • Sustainability by design, rather than as a retrofit.
  • Tailor-made materials for specific shelf life, transport, and market requirements.
