In a market racing toward sustainable alternatives, Krill Design’s latest innovation may just peel away the packaging industry’s dependency on traditional plastic. The Milan-based startup has unveiled ReKrill, a fully biodegradable and compostable biopolymer made entirely from food waste.

ReKrill is the latest outcome of Krill’s ongoing effort to embed circular economy principles into product design. Developed using by-products like orange rinds, citrus peels, coffee grounds, wine production residues, and wheat bran, this novel material offers a rare combination of high-performance properties and complete environmental compatibility. The material breaks down without leaving behind microplastics or toxic residues, even in marine environments.

ReKrill is created exclusively from non-edible food waste. That ethical sourcing principle ensures the innovation remains aligned with global sustainability goals, without competing with agricultural resources intended for human consumption.

From a technical standpoint, ReKrill challenges assumptions about the limitations of natural materials. The polymer is engineered to deliver mechanical and thermal resistance comparable to standard plastics, making it suitable for a wide range of packaging uses. And unlike materials that require industrial composting facilities, ReKrill is designed to decompose naturally, even in unmanaged conditions, reinforcing its credentials as a next-generation solution for eco-conscious brands.
